LAZERIAN : Message in a Bottle

Commissioned by Bruichladdich, a sustainable whisky brand as an awareness campaign. Members of the public were encouraged to write an environmental pledge on a piece of seeded paper and post it in the tree sculpture. Each piece of paper will then be planted into a tree. The sculpture was installed in Burough Market on Earth Day 2023.

MAKING PROCESS :

This was one of my quickest, yet most complex modelling processes yet.

It started with writing a code-based sketch in Grasshopper to generate a organic structure with branches attached to 10 apertures around a 1000 x 1800 cylinder.

From this original shape, I used the Rhino's SubD organic modelling tool to carve the organic tree shape and bottle.

After making sure the dimensions allowed for the seeded paper to pass through the branches, I exploded the components into hundreds of components to be lazer-cut out of recycled perspex and riveted together.

Finally, we build the wooden plinth and LED to under-light the sculpture.
